The DEVIL DISCO CLUB

2 October 2010

Trouble is back 'n' black!

You can be sure the Devil Disco Club DJs - Hobbes & Erik d'Viking [Trouble], Simonotron [Club for Heroes] and Kris Wasabi [Wasabi Disco] - will cover all the bases from soul and rap, myriad strains of vintage disco from New York, classic eighties boogie, cosmic, italo and other rarities, not to mention some poppin' electro-funk and proto-house gems.  You know where it's at!

Tonight's special live guests are Glasgow’s Futuristic Retro Champions.  They spell-out what they do with their name; modern pop with an old fashioned twist.

The Devil Disco Club is a new party about going back to basics, embracing your dark side and letting it all hang out.  It's about listening to some of the most exciting new dance music out there alongside the classics and it's about checking out a buzzing new live act that will move your feet and engage your mind. It's about doing all of this alongside some of your favourite people in one of Embra's favourite venues: the Bongo Club.

Music: soul, rap, boogie, italo, cosmic, disco, electro-funk, acid & early/proto-house: re-edits, remixes, extended versions etc

CONSTANT STATE - live

9 October 2010

Constant State are an exciting new indie guitar band who hail from the Wester Hailes area in Edinburgh.  They combine rocking riffs with soulful lyrics and gritty, foot stomping tunes.  The boys have been playing together for some time and have decided the time is right to debut their sound

19 Folds formed when Robin met Laurie in Dundee through a mutual love of Mogwai and Marty McComb.
Andy met Laurie through no mutual loves - he liked Van Halen, Laurie liked The Beatles.
a number of bands later, Edinburgh has now united the trio under their current guise.

The Psychic Hearts are a new rock & roll outfit from Edinburgh made up of members from Degrassi and Yule Scott and The Haight

THEA GILMORE - live

13 October 2010

We're delighted to have the very talented singer-songwriter Thea Gilmore,  playing live at The Bongo Club

We are lucky to have musicians like Thea Gilmore,  musicians that want more from themselves and more from music than some pre-formed,  whistle-friendly cud, something to chew on but never fully digest. In an age where artists – male and female – tend to be either hyper-sexualised or completely neutered,  Gilmore is that rare creature,  an actual adult with a heart and a soul,  a grown up with an opinion.

Thea Gilmore is a real person tackling the sort of issues real people deal with every day,  only, unlike the rest of us,  she tackles those issues with an utterly beautiful voice and songs that touch on folk and jazz and rock and Americana.

Not for no reason does Bruce Springsteen buy her records,  do artistes ranging from Martha Wainwright to Mike Scott seek to collaborate with her,  and not for no reason does Tom Waits’ celebrated percussionist Michael Blair appear on Murphy’s Heart, Gilmore’s tenth album – one that follows a sustained period of artistic and critical success.

We are in the midst of a truly exceptional English singer/songwriter - Mojo

Thea Gilmore's punk-folk takes its lead from Bob Dylan. She belies her tender years with an assertive lyricism which rings true and tellingly - The Guardian

There is no home grown talent to compare with this sweet voiced, sharp-edged from Oxford - The Mirror

The only alarming thing about Thea Gilmore is just how good she is - The Independent

Bold, uplifting, anthemic - The Times

Haunting beauty, aching mood and elegant craft - Time Out

The best female singer songwriter of the last ten years and then some - Uncut

Britain has spawned very few world class singer songwriters; Gilmore is in a league of her own - Q

SHAPESHIFTER - live

27 October 2010

Heralded as a musical phenomenon - Shapeshifter's unique blend of heavy soul, and drum + bass is every bit as rugged and epic as the landscape of their native New Zealand. Like Jonah Lomu on a D+B mission, their ground-breaking live show will knock you off your feet.

This five piece have, over the last ten years, re-written the rule book for dance acts down under, releasing three consecutive #1 independent albums, headlined every major festival across their region and officially become New Zealand's biggest live act!  Their platinum status has seen them collaborate with Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy's Drop) and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, support rock act Tool on tour and scoop no less than three awards at the NZ BNET Music Awards for Best Album, Song Of The Year and Best Live Act.

Earlier this year the band signed a remix of their 'Twin Galaxies' track by fellow NZ residents The Upbeats to D+B label Hospital Records, which featured on the massive 'Sick Music 2' compilation. Building on this success, Shapeshifter are pleased to announce signing to Hospital for the release of their album - 'The System Is A Vampire', along with a limited edition remix EP, both due for release October 2010.
