THE VASELINES - live

15 September 2010

DF Concerts present The Vaselines - they're alive!  Yaaaay!

www.thevaselines.co.uk

www.myspace.com/thevaselinesband

The music pouring out of Scotland in the mid 1980's was a primitive force that could be just as naive as it was brilliant.  The Vaselines brought Eugene Kelly's edgy, scratchy guitar work together with Frances McKee's poetic melancholia.  Their vocals were a shining light with Eugene's dry monotone trading off Frances's more charming female voice.

The Vaselines carnal obsessions were given as much time as their off-kilter pop experiments.  While sexual candour has rarely been the preserve of emotionally sensitive indie types, drawing on the Velvet Underground's rhythmic down-stroke and lustful subject matter, The Vaselines' sense of brazen mischief is exemplified by their very name.

Though they have only one album to their credit and broke up the week that album was released in 1989, The Vaselines have etched a special place in the hearts of many.  Chief amongst them was Kurt Cobain who with Nirvana covered three of their songs on their Incesticide and MTV Unplugged albums

While founder members and songwriters, Frances McKee and Eugene Kelly, have collaborated intermittently in the intervening years (they toured jointly and played a few Vaselines’ songs together in the wake of their respective solo albums in 2006) ,an unannounced appearance at a fundraiser in Glasgow's Mono for Malawi Orphan Support was the first evidence of new activity.  This was the start of a journey that has taken them to New York & Seattle, Sweden, Glasgow's ABC and festival appearances in the Brazilian cities of Sao Paolo and Goiania, appearing with artists as unlikely as Flight of the Conchords and Helmet along the way.

The show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken on July 9th 2008 was the band’s first in America, and one of two over-subscribed shows in the New York area before they played at a festival to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Sub Pop label, which released the definitive collection of Vaselines’ work, ‘The Way of the Vaselines’ in 1992.

Both Kelly and McKee remained musically active throughout the intervening years - the former with Captain America, Eugenius and finally as a solo artist; McKee with Suckle and ultimately on her own for 2006’s ‘Sunny Moon.’

And while both continue to work on their own projects, the success of the Vaselines’ shows in 2008 has offered the possibility of more appearances in the future.  Their concert at the Forum in London will be the first Vaselines show in the capital for twenty years and their biggest headline show.

Since reforming in 2008 The Vaselines have continued to tour and have played the Primavera Festival Barcelona, Latitude Festival Suffolk and Summersonic Festival in Tokyo and Osaka,Japan.

The new album... [sex with an x]    out: Mon Sept 13

Edinburgh Skeptics ... in the pub

16 September 2010

An opportunity for rational thinkers to meet and discuss all things skeptical, as well as having a montthly presentation by a reknowned skeptic [or even a believer] followed by a Q&A

Is it hard to be a skeptic?  Does it take more effort to disbelieve than it does to believe?  Why is belief in strange things so pervasive?  Is it something to do with the way we are hard-wired?  What do the answers to these questions tell us about our minds?  In this talk, Dr. Stuart Wilson will discuss these questions and how they relate to a variety of strange beliefs, from religion to the paranormal.

Skeptics in the Pub began in London in 1999, providing an opportunity for rational thinkers to meet and discuss all things skeptical as well as have a monthly presentation by a renowned skeptic or even believer followed by a Q&A.  There are over a dozen Skeptics in the Pub in England, but this is only one of two groups in Scotland [the other being Glasgow]

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - live

17 September 2010

American free-improviser & avant-garde singer/guitarist Eugene Chadbourne returns to Scotland,  bringing his outrageous brand of  LSD country & western,  bebop and protest music back for the first time this century.

The seminal figure in American free improvisation,  Chadbourne plays a uniquely entertaining mixture of country & western,  bebop,  rock,  jazz, thrash and folk protest.  Widely regarded as some kind of genius,  he has made over 80 albums,  and worked with figures as diverse as Camper Van Beethoven,  The Violent Femmes,  Shockabilly, John Zorn,  Jello Biafra,  Mojo Nixon,  Evan Johns,  The Sun City Girls and Jimmy Carl Black.  Appealing to a wide range of listeners,  Eugene draws on an extraordinary compendium of over 800 songs – a repertoire as unpredictable as it is vast.  On this tour he is accompanied by improvisational percussionist Roger Turner and Two Wings, a new project by the core members of Nalle

“Chadbourne is most compelling as a live performer,  switching at ease from electric guitar to banjo,  zipping through a tune that sounds totally improvised and yet recalls something buried in the collective folk memory,  like a punk Burl Ives, whipping off his spectacles to scrape them down the fretboard,  adding another dimension to his wonderfully pixilated sound.”    Robert Murray in Rock: The Rough Guide

Here's an interview with Fyfe from The Daily Telegraph:

Fyfe Dangerfield, leader of critically acclaimed experimental art pop ensemble Guillemots, has made a solo record.  And it’s a wonderful thing.

Fly Yellow Moon (released by Geffen) is by far the simplest and most focused album he’s produced, a collection of perfectly formed songs, blending rich musicality with emotional authenticity.  With hints of The Beatles (and particularly solo Lennon and McCartney, on Barricades and Firebird respectively), flashes of the exuberance of Motown and florid zest of ELO (on the uplifting She Needs Me), the intimacy of acoustic Neil Young (Livewire) and melancholy of Nick Drake (Don’t Be Shy), the songs sketch a history of classic singer-songwriting, yet present with a freshness, vigour and personality that stamp them as Dangerfield’s own.  It is music that twists and turns without ever losing the core of the song.

Dangerfield is not satisfied, however. “I’m having a bit of a crisis,” he admits, twisting in his seat with pent-up agitation. “I’m nearly out of my twenties now, but I feel I haven’t delivered an ounce of what I can deliver.

“I left school 10 years ago and I should have more to show for it. I’m hoping my thirties will be more prolific.”

Dangerfield is one of the most talented and creative musicians in pop, which may be part of his problem. The Guillemots’ albums are widescreen explosions of sound and ideas, though their 2006 debut Windowpanes is notably more coherent than the overloaded 2008 follow-up, Red.

Dangerfield has also composed choral and orchestral pieces, including In Wait, performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, to celebrate the re-opening of Birmingham Town Hall in 2007, and Eggshell Walker, a cello suite performed by Natalie Klein at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, in 2009.

He has collaborated with his brother Al Hutchin’s band, The Courtesy Group, on their self-released debut album, Tradesman’s Entrance, and written string arrangements and guested with a wide variety of other bands.  All of this, apparently, is not enough.

“Because I enjoy music so much, it’s hard to get into the mind-set of really focusing and just working on one thing until it gets done,” frets Dangerfield, a fidgety, scruffy individual who may suffer from the musical equivalent of attention deficit disorder.

His latest solo project, he says, was never even intended to be an album, which is perhaps why it works in such a straightforward way.  It commemorates a year of a relationship, “the joy of falling in love, the highs and lows but it leaves it open-ended, like it can go in any direction”.

The relationship is, in fact, over, but the songs remain. “They were written when I wasn’t even trying to write, after a beautiful night, or an argument, when something would just appear that captured the moment.”

There is a bit more to it than that, though. With the Guillemots, he works in a very improvisational way, conjuring up songs over band jams.  “I find that very exciting. Sound, arrangement, melodies, that’s what I’m drawn to.

“I only sing cause it would be such a hassle to find someone else to sing my songs. And I write lyrics because you can’t sing gibberish.  This record was about accepting that’s a really important part of what I do.  I’ve always felt I could write much better songs, something universal that will be heard on the radio in 30 years.”

The album was recorded with Guillemots co-producer Adam Noble.  “I had five days free, called up a mate, went into the studio and that was it. It was one of those times in life when everything’s aligned right.”

At the end, he had 16 songs and thought “we’ve got a record.  I didn’t feel the need for there to be overdubs that you hear on headphones the fifth time you listen to it. It’s just some songs on bass, drums and piano.”

I love the Guillemots, but you can be getting a handle on one of their songs when it makes a sharp left turn into a drum and bass extravaganza.  On Fly Yellow Moon, the colour and drama seems to spring naturally from the songs themselves.  The album comes out this week and has already been garnering superb reviews, but, typically, Dangerfield’s mind is on other things.  There’s a new Guillemots album in the works and he has commissions to write pieces for the CBSO and for Natalie Klein.

He has also started writing songs for other artists, because “I really love processed pop music. There’s a certain hard-headedness about sticking to the formula.”

And he wants to start making instrumental electronic music, “where I don’t have to sing”. And there’s more: Dangerfield rattles off musical plans as if he’s trying to convince himself.

“If I had my way, I’d love to put out 12 albums a year, one a month. But it’s not realistic,” he concludes gloomily. “I’m 29. Paul McCartney had left The Beatles by the time he was my age. It’s quite scary.”
