Edinburgh Skeptics ... The Sunday Sermon

4 July 2010

Keir Liddle will be talking on the subject of Crank Magnetism.  It will look at just what crank magnetism is and how it applies to swine flu, alternative medicine, conspiracy nuts, holocaust denial and AIDS denial.

This will then lead on to the important quesiton of, is there skeptic magnetism?

Skeptics in the Pub began in London in 1999, providing an opportunity for rational thinkers to meet and discuss all things skeptical as well as have a monthly presentation by a renowned skeptic or even believer followed by a Q&A.  There are over a dozen Skeptics in the Pub in England, but this is only one of two groups in Scotland [the other being Glasgow]

Currently, our socials are held upstairs in the Bongo Club Gallery Bar.  Events are irregular, but join our mailing list to be kept informed of when and where.

Coming along to a Skeptics in the Pub social is free, though on the nights of guest speakers we appreciate a donation of £2.50 to cover the speakers expenses.

For more details feel free to contact us, or just pop along to the next night

Edinburgh Skeptics ... in the pub

15 July 2010

"Jesus Never Existed"

Our guest speaker tonight is Kenneth Humphreys.  He holds post-graduate qualifications from two British universities and taught for many years in the UK, Turkey and Papua New Guinea, including a Senior Lecturership in Modern Languages.  His career outside of academe included management in the software industry.  Religion, and in particular the claims of Christianity, have been a life-long interest.  He is now fully occupied as a writer, radio broadcaster and public speaker, and campaigns energetically against unreason.  In Spring 2008 he debated The Resurrection - Fact or Fiction with Gary Habermas, Prof. of Apologetiics, at the McEwan Hall, Edinburgh.

The website Jesus Never Existed was launched in December 2001.  It receives more than a million visitors per year and is currently being made available in nine languages.

The book Jesus Never Existed was published in 2005 by Iconoclast Press.  It has been shipped to more than thirty countries.  An abridgment was republished in India in 2006 by Hindu Voice.  A Spanish edition is likely in the near future.

A second volume The Improbable Paul will be published in 2010.

DEVIL DISCO CLUB feat HRH live

16 July 2010

Trouble is back 'n' black!

You can be sure the Devil Disco Club DJs - Hobbes [Trouble], Simonotron [Club for Heroes] and Kris Wasabi [Wasabi Disco] - will cover all the bases from soul and rap, myriad strains of vintage disco from New York, classic eighties boogie, cosmic, italo and other rarities, not to mention some poppin' electro-funk and proto-house gems.  You know where it's at!

Tonight's special guests are HRH, playing live - there's not a lot we need to make up about them as Neil Cooper has already said it in The List:

'...Her Royal Highness, born in a back street somewhere between Tin Pan Alley and The Brill Building, a Frankenstein’s mistress rebuilt from the fallout of what happened after Giorgio Moroder met Donna Summer, A Certain Ratio backed Grace Jones, Saint Etienne dug Kylie and Xenomania and The Pet Shop Boys sprinkled stardust onto Girls Aloud.....'

'...she stayed out late with her two little boys Leon and The Modulator, fell in with the wrong crowd and got lost in an impeccable record collection that mixed up Suzi Quatro’s Chinnichap era anthems with Suicide squelch by way of Dr Feelgood snarl. ....'

The Devil Disco Club is a new party about going back to basics, embracing your dark side and letting it all hang out.  It's about listening to some of the most exciting new dance music out there alongside the classics and it's about checking out a buzzing new live act that will move your feet and engage your mind.  It's about doing all of this alongside some of your favourite people in one of Embra's favourite venues: the Bongo Club.

Music: soul, rap, boogie, italo, cosmic, disco, electro-funk, acid & early/proto-house: re-edits, remixes, extended versions etc

MOISHE'S BAGEL - live

17 July 2010

'Exhilarating, full-flavoured stuff, often breath-takingly intricate but played with jubilation... the Bagel acquires the momentum of an express train'  The Herald

Rip-roaring, foot-stomping, jazz-inflected klezmer and Balkan music from some of Scotland's finest musicians, Moishe's Bagel is an intoxicating, life-affirming mix of Eastern European dance music, Middle Eastern Rhythms and virtuoso performances.

'Expressive and raunchy... improvising confidence but with a classical attention to detail'  The Guardian

Formed in 2003, Moishe's Bagel combines the energy and passion of Eastern European folk music with the excitement and soul of improvisation.  Boasting some of the best instrumentalists that Scotland has to offer [Salsa Celtica, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Celtic Feet, Scottish National Jazz Orchestra], we are just as likely to see them jamming in a late night jazz den, grooving in a forest festival or enthralling an upmarket concert hall.

'There is something about this fearless Edinburgh quintet that is impossible not to like'  Songlines

Not too concerned with authenticity [there are enough people doing that already], they let the interaction of their individual personalities create their own style; a sound that mixes klezmer, folk dance, jazz, eastern percussion and more, topped off with dazzling musicality and classical rigour.  The result is a band which has the excitement of occasional improvisation, with an energy that keeps the music highly danceable, and visually and aurally exciting.

''Consummate musicians, the degree of concentration and engagement with their music is palpable... this is high-class work'  EdinburghGuide.Com

www.moishesbagel.co.uk

'One of the most moving musical experiences of my life... the audience were completely blown away by the performance'  Round And About Mull

BOSIE - live

23 July 2010

The Edinburgh-based band Bosie play live, launching their debut album 'Shoebox Memories', showcasing their blend of alternative acoustic/folk, with jazzy influences

Bosie [aka Fiona Mackenzie] was born and raised on the Isle of Lewis although now resides in Edinburgh.

She dabbled in a number of different genres of music from jazz, performing at the Aberdeen and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals, to original soul and covers funk bands based in Aberdeen.  A couple of years ago she decided to try her hand at writing her own songs.  She taught herself to play the guitar and got together with jazz guitarist Graeme Stephen and together they transformed the songs into something a little bit jazz and a little bit folk.

Bosie recently came runner up in the folk category of the UK songwriting contest for her song ‘Live In a Tree’.  This contest is endorsed by the Brit Trust [of Brit Awards fame].  She also attained global recognition for her songwriting when she became a double finalist in the September 2008 round of the VH1 Song of the Year Contest for her songs ‘Petticoat High’ and ‘Only Friend’.

Definition of bosie:  A doric word used to describe a hug or embrace - derived from bosom, e.g. "gie's a bosie" - ["give me a hug"]

www.myspace.com/bosiebosie

Other members of Bosie include:

Musical co-writer and guitarist Graeme Stephen is a composer and musician based in Edinburgh.  Best known in the jazz circles, his own group the ‘Graeme Stephen Sextet’ was one of the three winners of the Jazz Services 2006 PROMOTERS CHOICE AWARD.  He also plays in a number of other groups including Newt, the Fraser Fifield Band, and Vicky Fifield’s band ‘Devotion’.  You can listen to his music at www.graemestephen.com

Double bassist and producer David Donnelly is based in Edinburgh.  David is also a singer/songwriter and plays with his own band which can be heard at www.myspace.com/daviddonnelly7 . He has worked with numerous other artists including Finlay Quaye, Joe Malik, and Salsa Celtica

Glasgow based percussionist Guy Nicolson is the rhythmic heart of the band.  He is probably best known for his work with Moishe’s Bagel.  He has also played with guitarist Tony MacManus and currently plays with multi-instrumentalist Fraser Fifield

29 July 2010

Tonight we celebrate the new album launch from funk/soul/electro band Digital Jones

Digital Jones are a wee band with a massive soul.  Stomping all over the standard musical fair these electronic songsters have pounced and unleashed their signature sound upon the unsuspecting public.  Combining live and sample sounds, Digital Jones make canny knowing music.  Through the power of the MPC this band have corrupted Phil Mcbride's fat upright bass grooves with some flithy, flatulent synth and disitlled driving hard 80's electro beats with fierce live drums from tight as a button Jamie Graham.  Throw in some Prince-esque horns and compelling key melodies from Chuck Dearness and front it with the rich and sassy vocals of screaming red headed diva Nikki Kent and you got yourself a real heavy sound.

This is music with the hard driving edge of electro at its most vital, but it is designed to be made and played live and Digital Jones were born to play out.  Their chemistry and energy really come to light in their live show and this was made all the more apparent after an incredible sold out gig supporting soul legend Marlena Shaw.

Their eargerly- awaited debut album will be premiered tonight!

BIG N BASHY feat Elijah & Skilliam

31 July 2010

Big N Bashy is one the hottest nights to hit Edinburgh’s Saturday night club scene in recent years, which has already gained a steady and loyal following amongst Edinburgh’s clubbers for its up-to-the-minute, bass-heavy sounds.

Special guests tonight are Elijah & Skilliam [Rinse FM/Butterzblog.co.uk] and Taz Buckfaster [Subway/Elektrikal], with resident DJs playing tonight, Deburgh [grime] and Decoy Roy [reggae]

Bored of the usual one genre per night ethos of most nights, the Big N Bashy team plays the finest reggae, grime, dubstep and jungle through a monster combination of the Bongo Club's in- house sound system and an extra six subs care of the well respected dub reggae sounds of the mighty Messenger Sound System.

With this great combo of musical styles and a killer sound system Big N Bashy delivers the biggest beats and bashiest basslines, while The Messenger ensures the good vibrations all night long!
